Following what could be described as a cliched difficult time in my life, mid-life some might refer to it as, I had the opportunity to take a step back and reconsider my own personal path, my plan, my "What next?", my "Why?". After a long period of more than 20 years creating a successful career in the corporate world, working at Global organisations such as L'Oreal, Unilever and Coty, together with fantastic people from many corners of the world, I saw my chance to turn my passion and my dream into reality.
Becoming a Professional Life Coach.
This was achieved when I certified with New Insights Life Coaching UK as the first of many steps on my new vocational path.
Although Coaching, Mentoring and Development, in many ways, was already a big part of my management and leadership roles, I wanted to back this up academically, so I retrained and certified in Life & Personal Development coaching and founded JK Coaching.
My passion for - and deep interest in - people, learning and development, as well as human behaviour, found the perfect space to grow from and over the past few years I've continued my own learning and development by adding further training and certification including Personal and Business Emotional Intelligence accredited by the British Psychological Society.
All of us have different and unique experiences, despite how similar they look, so I can never know exactly how you feel. However, I have a lot of first-hand experience of both digging myself into holes and then finding my way back out of them. I have dealt with loss, pain, change, joy, rejection, failure and success at one stage or another during my own life journey and I use all of this experience to help you find your answers to the questions “what next?” and "why?". Actually, just getting to the stage where these are questions you want to ask is a powerful change and all you need from there is empowering support. Change has certainly been a constant in my life so far and also played a very important role in how I was able to identify, develop and continue to strengthen my own resilience, self-belief and confidence.
I can just about say that I was born in the 'free spirited' 60's (1969) 🙂 and grew up in Denmark, one of the Scandinavian homes for the concepts of 'HYGGE'* and 'LYKKE'*.
*(if you are not familiar with these, I highly recommend you Google them or I'll be more than happy to share more with you)
I am therefore naturally an advocate for these life concepts that according to official psychological studies, have placed Scandinavians among the "happiest and most positive people alive'".
In some ways my own beginning was perhaps not as happy and positive as I could have wished for. I grew up in a somewhat limiting and small village countryside community where you had no choice but to attend the one school on offer. There was not much to do when not attending school apart from working at one of the two nearby farms. I ended up working at both. My father - at the time - was very controlling and used a strict and often physical discipline. We moved home 8 times in the first ten years of my childhood. My parents' marriage was volatile, creating an unsettling environment to grow up in, and all while figuring out who I was and what I wanted to be. Having to leave home at the young age of just 16, living on my own during the final stage of completing my education, quickly taught me, albeit the hard way, how to stand on my own two feet and how, if it was to be, it would be up to me!
Today, I am very grateful for everything all these 'challenges' taught me, even if at the time I wasn't consciously aware. I now know that they helped me to successfully finish school, complete my 3-year apprenticeship and conclude my military service at the Royal Danish Air Force. Taking valuable lessons with me from these initial 'bumps', finding myself and a positive optimistic approach to life as well as well as becoming a professional coach has allowed me to have a close relationship with my father today and one that includes gratitude and respect and soon my parents are celebrating their 50th Wedding Anniversary.
The almost three decades that have followed since then have been the most fulfilling chapters in my book of life so far.
Living in hugely interesting and inspiring places such as Sweden, Ireland, France, UK, Switzerland and Singapore, has taught me so much about people and the World we all share. Having built a corporate leadership career working with inspiring masters in their fields, I've travelled to places I could only ever have dreamed of, especially during 5 1/2 years living in Asia, and although I'm now back home, living in the UK, I will always consider myself a citizen of the World.
Aside from coaching, mindfulness through mediation and my intense interest in elephant conservation projects, I share my love for dogs with the love of my life and I'm a keen gardener. My guilty pleasure is baking cakes - and lots of them - although I am currently in training to run my 4th London Marathon in 2020, in what will be my 50th birth year. The cakes may have to take a backseat until May 2020 🙂
I am a firm believer in the Power of Positive Thinking. Life, and the constantly changing World we live in, can be testing, stressful and unsettling, even at the best of times. I am passionate about giving you the guidance and tools you need to maximise your personal and professional relationships, and how to give yourself the time you desire and deserve.
I empower you to be your best self in all aspects of life. I provide friendly and constructive guidance to help you reach your full potential. I will help you realise your goals and provide you with a roadmap on how to reach them and accomplish more.
"DON'T JUST GO THROUGH LIFE, GROW THROUGH LIFE"
Most of my Coachees prefer their sessions to be via phone, Skype or Zoom. In fact, in some instances a session can be even more effective via phone or video call. It's entirely a personal preference and you will get exactly the same quality outcome from the session as if we meet Face to Face.
A few of my Coachees prefer a Face to Face session which I am very happy and able to accommodate. The Face to Face sessions will take place at my home address in Greenhithe, Kent where I work from. If you'd prefer the sessions to take place elsewhere, we can talk about an alternative location that is convenient to us both.
